Portugal shock Denmark to take top spot in group B
Portugal secured an incredible win against co-hosts Denmark at the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, winning 31:29 to book top spot in Men’s EHF EURO 2026 group B. It was Denmark’s first defeat in their spiritual home since the EHF EURO 2014 final against France, when they lost 32:41.
Both sides continue in the main round, but Portugal carry two points with them.
We simply lost to a better team today. Portugal played really well, very strong. They put us under a lot of pressure in attack. They forced us into technical errors, and defensively we were actually set up quite well at times. But on the counterattacks, the Costa brothers just completely flattened us, and that obviously makes things very difficult for us.
It is tough to put it in words. We were superb in many parts: our goalkeepers helped us a lot, defence-wise it was perfect how we stopped Denmark. In attack, we had a high-scoring efficiency against Emil (Nielsen) in the goal. The rest I do not know. But I feel really proud of this team. It is incredible that we made it with two points to the main round.
