Danish rivals share spoils; Brest, FTC and Bistrita celebrate away wins
After months of waiting, round 1 of the EHF Champions League Women 2026/27 concluded on Sunday with three away teams taking wins, leaving those home sides empty-handed. FTC-Toyota Kovács proved too strong for OTP Group Buducnost, Gloria Bistrita beat HSG Blomberg-Lippe on their debut and Brest Bretagne Handball left no room for surprise against Sola HK. Odense Håndbold were challenged by Nykøbing Falster Håndbold in an all-Danish duel which ended with no winner after an exciting clash.
It feels great to have started the Champions League season. Great to have the first match done. I would have wished we had played a better first half but am very happy that we were able to improve and play a stronger second half.
I'm very happy about the victory. We are still struggling a bit with the clear chances but played a good second half. We had the chance to kill the game but didn’t, and it was tight. I still feel we had good control, though. Victory is victory, and we are at the beginning of the season. It is tough, but we made it and go home happy.
We played against FTC, who are the third favourites to win the EHF Champions League. We tried to put up as strong a fight as possible, but we were limited by the absence of five players. We made too many missed shots and technical errors, which cost us a better result. Our defence was good and we showed a lot of physicality, but we had 25 missed shots, and a team like FTC knows how to punish that.
It was a good game for us. It is always important to get two points at the start of the season. I am happy with the victory because Buducnost can be a very difficult opponent at home.
We gave our hearts on the court and stuck to our philosophy and mentality. For ten minutes, we had problems dealing with the strong opponent’s one-on-one movements, but we will learn from that. We will continue working on our effectiveness and prepare for the next game.
It was a very tough game, and the details made the difference, especially in defence. I’m very proud of my team.
I think it was a really strong performance from us. When we play at this level, I feel we should win the game, because it will be difficult for us to perform much better than we did today. The level of our performance was very high. Looking at how the game developed, we have to be satisfied with one point, but I think our performance deserved two.
It was a tough game for us. The match went back and forth, and we didn’t play at our maximum level today. We had hoped for more, but in the end we have to settle for a draw.
