Nantes upset Magdeburg; Barça in MOTW and Aalborg both win
It was all about group B on Wednesday for the first night of round 5 in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League 2024/25 group phase. HBC Nantes stunned SC Magdeburg in Germany 32:28, beating the 2023 champions for the first time ever. Both finalists from last season claimed narrow wins: Barça nearly squandered a six-goal lead in the closing minutes of the MOTW in Croatia before beating HC Zagreb 31:29, and Aalborg Håndbold kept both points at home against OTP Bank - PICK Szeged (29:28) only after the visitors missed a last-second penalty.
I can't be happy and celebrate a loss. Barça have an amazing team, but I feel like we have once again shown everyone we have got what it takes to compete against top-level teams. Unfortunately, we weren't able to keep the tempo high throughout the full course of the game, and that is something we have got to focus on moving forward, as you simply can't defeat anyone in the Champions League without it.
We knew what to expect here, how dangerous Zagreb can be in front of their spectators. Zagreb were splendid in the second half – their defence was on a whole new level compared to the first half, and I feel like we can be happy about this win here in the end.
It is difficult to find the words right now with the emotions. We are really happy to get the two points and I think we deserved it, being in the lead in almost the whole game. We had some periods where we struggled a little bit, but the team kept fighting and we played against an amazing handball team.
I just want to say that I am proud of the team today. It is extremely difficult to play here and they are last season’s finalists. It would have been some very big points to take away from here, but we were really close and in the end we had the chance.
We had problems getting into the game right from the start, but we went into half-time 16:15 ahead. We then had a really bad spell in the second half, in which we trailed 18:22. It is now the second home game we have lost and that hurts immensely.
Winning in Magdeburg is something special. I am very proud of my teammates. We have a few injured players and everyone gave 120 per cent today.
