MOTW brings joy to the Germans, FTC and Metz win on the road
Round 3 of the EHF Champions League Women 2024/25 concluded on Sunday with three guest victories. In Match of the Week Ludwigsburg celebrated a phenomenal victory in Bucharest against Rapid. For the German side that was their first win this season, and Rapid's first loss.
Metz Handball eked out a win against NFH (28:27) after a furious comeback from the Danish side, which still conceded their third loss in a row. The Hungarian champions FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria dominated the match against Storhamar from start to finish, taking their third consecutive win 27:21 for their best start in four years in the EHF Champions League Women.
It was not as easy as it looks. We have played not only against Rapid, but against the fiery home fans. We have done a great job, I am so proud. I think the most important thing was to control their line players. We managed to find the right solutions. Our defence was good enough to enable us to develop our fast breaks again.
We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, while their goalkeeper was also good. Those mistakes gave them a lot of fast breaks, they punished us in the first period. In the second we played slightly better, but again started making a lot of errors. We must do better.
We started the game quite strong in our defence. Then, Storhamar always have these minutes where they are fighting back and show really high level. They came with this in the last period of the first half. So, that was a bit of a warning for us. We are very satisfied. Storhamar are a strong team and they will be lethal for all opponents.
I think FTC are a great team. Their defence in the first half was brilliant. We struggled a lot, because they were prepared. Our defense was good, however they have a lot of good players, Kanor and Dmitrieva are not easy to stop.
It was a tough match, NFH are a strong team. They have a lot of different ways to play that we had to be prepared for, and we did not play quite as expected. But I am very happy with the two points.
We had a bad start. Not even our seven against six was good in the beginning. Our defence was not aggressive enough. We changed a bit in the defence and gave our goalkeepers better opportunities. We are still new in this Champions League and we have a lot to learn. I am proud that we managed to press Metz.
