Hallgrímsson lifts Iceland past Hungary in dramatic group final
There was an electric atmosphere for the final match in Men's EHF EURO 2026 group F in Kristianstad, with Hungary and Iceland meeting to decide who would take two points to the main round.
The players lived up to the occasion and left everything one could hope for on the court. After an intense 60 minutes, Iceland can celebrate not only a 24:23 victory against Hungary, but also two crucial points for the main round in Malmö.
It was a really tough match, I think both teams concentrated on the defence and the goalkeepers, I think they saved amazing. When we play against each other is always really hard match, intensity, big emotions, it was the same today. I think the big difference was how many shots we missed, or how many shots Viktor Hallgrímsson saved, but I am so happy how we play and how we fight 60 minutes. It was not easy for them to beat us.
Viktor (Hallgrímsson) was the biggest reason for the two points. He hasn’t performed on this level by now, he knew it. He still had his game to come, and that was tonight. It was not surprising for me, this development of Viktor. I hope he will keep it for many games in a row.
